Counselor’s Connection

Seniors:  Please let Ms. Wilson know any and all scholarships you have received so that you may be recognized at the awards assembly.

Parents:  Our Awards assembly is set for Thursday, May 11th at 1:00 pm.  Please come and support your students.  Please take your younger students (incoming freshmen through juniors and even younger) to visit a couple of campuses this summer.  Students really don’t know if a campus is a good fit until they actually visit.

Students:  The next ACT is set for June 10th.  The deadline to sign up is May 5th without a late fee.  The test costs $42.50.  JOM will reimburse Native American students, $30.00 one time their junior year and one time their senior year.  Students on Free/Reduce Lunch may have a fee waiver one time per year for both their junior and senior years.  The state of Oklahoma paid for all juniors to take the ACT in March.  Therefore, NHS will no longer reimburse students for other ACT test dates.  It is very important to take the ACT at least once prior to the start of the senior year.  It is a good idea to take the test towards the end of the sophomore year, as practice for the real test, especially if your student suffers from test anxiety.  If you do not have an ID please obtain one ASAP or let me know so I can make you an ID letter.

Students can take practice tests at actstudent.org and http://www.crackact.com.  Another free ACT prep is www.march2success.com.  There are interactive games and this site can also help you with nursing exams, tech school entrance exams and assist with STEM courses.

Future ACT Test Dates:

Test Dates                              Regular Deadline                  Late Fee Required

June 10                                    May 5                                      May 6-19

All of you should be thinking about life after high school.  Community college, University, tech school, military and on the job training are all great things to consider.  Check out www.okcollegestart.org and set up your profile.  Compare colleges, majors and careers and request transcripts to be sent to colleges.  Also check out www.zinch.com and www.fastweb.com for scholarships.  They have many scholarships and not all of them are for seniors only.

Driver’s Letter:  Students needing a letter for their Driver’s Permit need to put their name on Ms. Wilson’s door a week before they need the letter.  She is not always at the high school and if you didn’t pass the test then a time to retake the test must be set up.  This cannot be done at the last minute!!!!  Also, if you will need that letter this summer sign up on her door.  She does not work during the summer and you will not be able to get a letter until school resumes in the fall.

OSU Junior Day:  Saturday, April 22.  See Ms. Wilson for info.

Operation Orange Summer Camp:  For students interested in a career in medicine,  there are several camps during the summer through OSU.  See Ms. Wilson for info.

Students:  25 free Summer Academies are available and free for students entering 8-12th grades.  They are hosted on several college campuses.  Highlights and subject areas include:  architecture, forensics, aeronautics, biotechnology, engineering etc.  For info: okhighered.org/summer-academies or call 1-800-858-1840.
